Ingredient Highlights
- Pierogis: These dumplings, typically filled with cheese and potatoes, provide the heartiness and base for this casserole. Frozen pierogis make this recipe super simple, saving time while still delivering great flavor.
- Kielbasa: A flavorful, smoky sausage that adds a savory depth to the dish. You can choose any halal sausage or kielbasa that suits your taste.
- Cheese: Shredded cheddar cheese gives the casserole a melty, gooey texture that binds everything together.
- Sour Cream: Adds a creamy, tangy element to the casserole that balances out the richness of the cheese and sausage.
- Cream of Mushroom Soup: Creates a rich, velvety sauce that coats the pierogis and kielbasa, making it ultra comforting. For a Halal version, be sure to choose Halal-certified canned soups.
Instructions
Prepare the Ingredients:
- Prep the Ingredients: Slice the kielbasa or halal sausage into rounds or chunks, and dice the onion.
- Layer the Crockpot: Begin by placing half of the frozen pierogis at the bottom of the Crockpot. Then, add half of the kielbasa slices and onions on top of the pierogis.
- Mix the Sauce: In a separate bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, chicken broth, sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika (if using), and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir well until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
- Layer the Casserole: Pour half of the sauce mixture over the pierogi, kielbasa, and onions, then repeat the process with another layer of pierogis, sausage, onions, and the remaining sauce.
Cook the Casserole:
- Slow Cook: Set the Crockpot to low and cook for 5-6 hours, or on high for 3-4 hours. The pierogis should be fully cooked, and the casserole should be bubbly and heated through.
- Add Cheese: About 15 minutes before serving, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top of the casserole. Cover and allow the cheese to melt into the casserole.
Serve:
- Garnish and Serve: Once the cheese is melted and the casserole is cooked, garnish with freshly chopped parsley for a pop of color. Serve the casserole hot and enjoy the delicious, comforting flavors!
