Ingredients
Scale
For the Stir Fry:
- 1 lb (450g) beef sirloin or flank steak: Thinly sliced against the grain. Beef sirloin is tender and flavorful, making it perfect for stir-fry.
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or sesame oil: For stir-frying the beef and vegetables.
- 1 medium onion: Thinly sliced. Onion adds sweetness and depth to the dish.
- 2 bell peppers (red, green, or yellow): Thinly sliced. Bell peppers add color and crunch.
- 1 medium carrot: Julienned or sliced thinly. Carrots bring a slight sweetness and texture.
- 1 cup broccoli florets: Lightly steamed or raw, depending on your preference. Broccoli adds a fresh, earthy flavor and a dose of nutrition.
- 2 cloves garlic: Minced. Garlic brings an aromatic depth to the stir fry.
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger: Grated. Ginger adds a fragrant, spicy kick to the dish.
For the Stir Fry Sauce:
- ¼ cup soy sauce: A key ingredient in the sauce that provides the umami flavor.
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce (optional, or use a vegetarian alternative): Adds a deep, savory flavor to the sauce.
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce: For a touch of sweetness.
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar: Adds acidity and balances the sweetness of the hoisin sauce.
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil: For a nutty, toasted flavor.
- 1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar: For sweetness.
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch: Helps thicken the sauce.
- ¼ cup water or beef broth: To thin out the sauce and ensure it coats the beef and vegetables nicely.
Garnish (Optional):
- Chopped green onions: For garnish and added freshness.
- Sesame seeds: For a crunchy texture and nutty flavor.
- Red pepper flakes: If you prefer a bit of heat, sprinkle a few red pepper flakes on top.
Instructions
First Step: PREPARE THE BEEF
- Slice the Beef: Begin by slicing the beef thinly against the grain. This helps to ensure that the beef remains tender when cooked. Aim for slices that are about 1/8-inch thick, which will cook quickly and evenly.
- Marinate the Beef (optional but recommended): If you have the time, marinate the beef in a mixture of 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon cornstarch, and 1 teaspoon sesame oil for 15-20 minutes. This step helps tenderize the meat and infuse it with flavor. If you’re in a rush, skip this step and proceed to the next.
Second Step: PREPARE THE VEGETABLES
- Chop the Vegetables: While the beef is marinating, prepare your vegetables. Slice the bell peppers, onion, and carrots into thin strips. Cut the broccoli into small florets. If you like your vegetables a little softer, you can lightly steam the broccoli before adding it to the stir fry.
- Mince Garlic and Grate Ginger: Mince the garlic cloves and grate the ginger. Both garlic and ginger are essential for creating the depth of flavor in the stir fry.
Third Step: MAKE THE STIR FRY SAUCE
- Combine the Sauce Ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, honey (or brown sugar), and cornstarch. Add water or beef broth to adjust the consistency of the sauce. Stir until the cornstarch is dissolved and everything is well combined. Set aside.
Fourth Step: COOK THE BEEF
- Heat the Pan: Place a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable or sesame oil and let it heat up until shimmering.
- Stir-Fry the Beef: Add the sliced beef to the pan in a single layer. Let it sear without moving it for about 2-3 minutes, then stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes until the beef is browned and cooked through. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside.
Fifth Step: COOK THE VEGETABLES
- Stir-Fry the Vegetables: In the same pan, add the remaining tablespoon of oil. Add the onion, bell peppers, carrot, and broccoli. Stir-fry the vegetables for about 5-6 minutes, or until they are crisp-tender. Be sure to keep stirring to prevent burning.
- Add Garlic and Ginger: Once the vegetables are almost done, add the minced garlic and grated ginger. Stir-fry for an additional 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
Sixth Step: COMBINE THE BEEF AND SAUCE
- Add the Beef Back: Return the cooked beef to the pan with the vegetables. Stir everything together to combine.
- Pour in the Sauce: Pour the stir fry sauce over the beef and vegetables. Stir well to ensure that the sauce evenly coats everything. Let it simmer for another 2-3 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken and the flavors to meld together.
Final Step: GARNISH AND SERVE
- Garnish: Once the stir fry is ready, remove it from the heat. Garnish with chopped green onions, sesame seeds, and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for extra heat if desired.
- Serve: Serve the beef stir fry over steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal. You can also serve it with a side of spring rolls or a light salad.
