Ingredients
Scale
For the Meatballs:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef or chicken: You can use any ground meat of your choice. For a leaner option, chicken or turkey is ideal, while beef gives a richer flavor.
- 1 large egg: This helps bind the meatball mixture together.
- ½ cup breadcrumbs: Provides structure and helps keep the meatballs tender.
- 2 cloves garlic, minced: Adds depth and flavor.
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley: For a burst of color and freshness.
- 1 teaspoon onion powder: A must-have seasoning for extra flavor.
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper: For a touch of heat and flavor.
- 1 teaspoon salt: To season the meatballs evenly.
- ¼ cup milk: To help keep the meatballs moist and tender.
For the Firecracker Sauce:
- ⅓ cup sriracha sauce: For the spicy kick that gives these meatballs their fiery flavor. You can adjust this based on how hot you like your food.
- ⅓ cup sweet chili sauce: Adds sweetness to balance the heat of the sriracha.
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce: Enhances the umami flavor and gives the sauce depth.
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar: To provide some acidity and balance out the sweetness and spiciness.
- 1 tablespoon honey: For a touch of sweetness that helps round out the flavors.
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder: Adds an extra layer of garlic flavor to the sauce.
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger: For a hint of warm spice in the sauce.
Optional Garnishes:
- Chopped green onions: For freshness and color.
- Sesame seeds: For a bit of crunch and garnish.
- Fresh cilantro: Adds a vibrant flavor contrast.
Instructions
FIRST STEP: PREPARE THE MEATBALL MIXTURE
- Mix the Meatball Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef (or chicken), egg, breadcrumbs, minced garlic, parsley, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. Pour in the milk and mix everything together until it’s fully incorporated. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the meatballs tough.
- Shape the Meatballs: Using your hands or a spoon, scoop out portions of the mixture and roll them into meatballs. Aim for a size that’s about 1-1.5 inches in diameter. You can make them bigger or smaller depending on your preference.
- Place on a Baking Sheet: Arrange the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly greased. Make sure they are spaced evenly to allow for even cooking.
SECOND STEP: COOK THE MEATBALLS
- Bake the Meatballs: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the meatballs in the oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown on the outside and fully cooked through. You can check for doneness by cutting into one of the meatballs; the inside should be no longer pink.
- Alternatively, Pan-Fry the Meatballs: If you prefer a more crispy exterior, you can pan-fry the meatballs in a skillet over medium heat. Add a bit of oil and cook the meatballs in batches, turning them frequently to ensure they are browned and cooked through.
THIRD STEP: PREPARE THE FIRECRACKER SAUCE
- Combine the Ingredients: In a small saucepan, whisk together the sriracha, sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, garlic powder, and ground ginger.
- Simmer the Sauce: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. Allow it to cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will thicken slightly as it heats.
- Taste and Adjust: Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed. If you like it spicier, add more sriracha. If you prefer a sweeter sauce, add a little more honey. Feel free to customize the balance of flavors to your liking.
FOURTH STEP: COAT THE MEATBALLS
- Toss the Meatballs in the Sauce: Once the meatballs are cooked, transfer them to a large bowl and pour the firecracker sauce over the top. Gently toss the meatballs until they are well-coated in the sauce.
- Serve: Transfer the sauced meatballs to a serving platter and garnish with chopped green onions, sesame seeds, and fresh cilantro for added freshness and crunch.
