Ingredients
Scale
- 12–16 wonton wrappers (depending on the size of your muffin tin)
- 1 cup cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheddar and mozzarella)
- 2–3 fresh jalapeños, seeds removed and finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon sour cream
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)
Ingredient Highlights
- Wonton Wrappers: These wrappers provide the perfect crispy, golden shell for the creamy filling, adding a delightful crunch to every bite.
- Cream Cheese: The creamy texture of the cream cheese makes the filling rich and smooth, balancing the spiciness of the jalapeños.
- Cheddar Cheese: Shredded cheddar cheese melts beautifully inside the wonton cup, enhancing the flavor and adding another layer of cheesy goodness.
- Jalapeños: Fresh jalapeños give the poppers their signature heat and vibrant flavor, while the seeds can be removed to control the level of spiciness.
Instructions
Prepare the Wonton Cups:
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 12-cup muffin tin with cooking spray or olive oil to prevent sticking.
- Shape the Wonton Cups: Gently press one wonton wrapper into each muffin cup, making sure to mold it into a cup shape. You can use your fingers or a small spoon to press the wrapper into the tin. Be careful not to tear the wrappers.
- Bake the Wonton Shells: Bake the wonton wrappers in the preheated oven for about 5-7 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on them to prevent overbaking, as they can brown quickly.
Prepare the Filling:
- Mix the Filling: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped jalapeños, mayonnaise, sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir until the mixture is smooth and all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Taste and Adjust: Taste the filling and adjust the seasoning to your liking. If you prefer a spicier flavor, you can add extra jalapeños or even a pinch of cayenne pepper.
Assemble and Bake:
- Fill the Wonton Cups: Once the wonton cups are golden and crispy, remove them from the oven and spoon the cream cheese mixture into each cup. Be generous with the filling, as it will puff up slightly during baking.
- Bake Again: Return the filled wonton cups to the oven and bake for an additional 10-12 minutes, or until the filling is hot and bubbly, and the cheese has melted.
Garnish and Serve:
- Garnish and Serve: Once out of the oven, allow the Jalapeño Popper Wonton Cups to cool for a few minutes. Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro for a burst of color and freshness, and serve immediately while still warm.
