Layered Taco Dip

  • Author: Rayne
  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

Scale

  • For the base layer:
  • 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 packet taco seasoning mix (make sure it’s halal)
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice (optional)
  • For the meat layer:
  • 1 lb halal ground beef or chicken
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 packet taco seasoning mix (halal)
  • For the toppings:
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (or Mexican cheese blend)
  • 1 medium tomato, finely chopped
  • ½ cup green onions, sliced
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • ½ cup black olives, sliced
  • 1 jalapeño, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 1 cup salsa (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 cup guacamole (optional)

Ingredient Highlights

  • Ground Beef/Chicken: You can use halal ground beef or chicken, seasoned with taco seasoning, as the hearty meat layer. This brings flavor and richness to the dip.
  • Cream Cheese & Sour Cream: Together, they create a smooth, tangy, and creamy layer that forms the base of your dip. You can adjust the tanginess to your liking by adding more or less sour cream.
  • Taco Seasoning: This seasoning mix imparts a savory and spiced flavor to both the cream cheese base and the ground meat layer. Be sure to check that your taco seasoning is halal-certified, free from non-halal ingredients.
  • Fresh Vegetables: Tomatoes, lettuce, and green onions add a crunchy, fresh texture to balance the richness of the creamy layers.

Instructions

Prepare the Base Layer:

  1. Blend Cream Cheese and Sour Cream: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and sour cream. Use a hand mixer or a whisk to blend the two together until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add Taco Seasoning: Stir in the taco seasoning mix and lime juice (if using) until well combined. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
  3. Spread into Dish: Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly in the bottom of a large serving dish or a 9×9-inch pan.

Prepare the Meat Layer:

  1. Cook the Ground Meat: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef or chicken and cook until browned and fully cooked through, breaking up the meat into crumbles as it cooks.
  2. Season the Meat: Once the meat is cooked, add the taco seasoning and a little water according to the seasoning package directions. Stir to combine and let the mixture simmer for a few minutes until the meat is coated in the seasoning and the mixture thickens slightly.
  3. Layer the Meat: Spoon the cooked, seasoned ground meat over the cream cheese base and spread it evenly.

Add the Toppings:

  1. Cheese Layer: Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the meat layer.
  2. Fresh Vegetables: Add a layer of shredded lettuce, followed by chopped tomatoes, green onions, black olives, and sliced jalapeños (if using).
  3. Salsa and Guacamole: Spoon salsa over the top, spreading it evenly. Optionally, you can add a layer of guacamole on top for extra creaminess and flavor.

Chill and Serve:

  1. Chill: Cover the layered taco dip with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  2. Serve: When ready to serve, offer tortilla chips, pita chips, or fresh veggies for dipping. Enjoy the layers of flavor and texture in each bite!
