Orange Glazed Salmon

  • Author: Rayne
  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

Scale

For the Orange Glaze:

  • 1 cup fresh orange juice: The star ingredient for the glaze, providing a refreshing, tangy sweetness.
  • Zest of 1 orange: Adds a concentrated orange flavor to the glaze.
  • 2 tablespoons honey: A natural sweetener that enhances the orange’s sweetness.
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free): Adds a savory, salty depth to the glaze, balancing the sweetness of the honey and orange juice.
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard: Gives the glaze a subtle tang and depth of flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil: Helps thicken the glaze and adds a rich texture.
  • 1 clove garlic, minced: Provides a mild, aromatic garlic flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger: Adds a zesty, spicy kick that complements the sweetness of the orange.

For the Salmon:

  • 4 salmon fillets (6 ounces each): Salmon is high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, making it a nutritious choice.
  • Salt and pepper: For seasoning.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil: For searing or grilling the salmon.
  • Fresh herbs (optional, for garnish): Parsley, thyme, or dill make for great garnishes that add color and freshness.

Instructions

FIRST STEP: PREPARE THE ORANGE GLAZE

  1. Juice and Zest the Orange: Begin by juicing one fresh orange and zesting it. Set the juice and zest aside for later use.
  2. Cook the Glaze: In a medium saucepan, combine the fresh orange juice, orange zest, honey, soy sauce, Dijon mustard, olive oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Stir to combine the ingredients, and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. Reduce the Glaze: Allow the glaze to simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it has reduced by about half and has thickened to a syrupy consistency. Keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t burn.
  4. Set Aside: Once the glaze has thickened, remove it from the heat and set it aside to cool slightly.

SECOND STEP: PREPARE THE SALMON

  1. Season the Salmon: Pat the salmon fillets dry with paper towels. This helps the seasoning stick and ensures a crispy exterior. Season both sides of the fillets generously with salt and pepper.
  2. Cook the Salmon: You can either pan-sear, bake, or grill the salmon based on your preference.
    • For Pan-Seared Salmon: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, place the salmon fillets in the skillet, skin-side down (if your fillets have skin). Cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until the salmon is golden brown on the outside and reaches your desired level of doneness.
    • For Baked Salmon: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the seasoned salmon fillets on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
    • For Grilled Salmon: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Brush the grill grates with a little oil to prevent sticking. Place the salmon fillets on the grill and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until cooked to your preference.
  3. Drizzle the Glaze: Once the salmon is cooked, drizzle the orange glaze over the top of each fillet. You can also serve extra glaze on the side for dipping.

THIRD STEP: FINISH AND GARNISH

  1. Garnish the Salmon: After drizzling the glaze, garnish the salmon with freshly chopped herbs such as parsley, thyme, or dill. These herbs add a burst of freshness that complements the sweetness of the orange glaze.
  2. Serve: Serve the orange glazed salmon hot, either with a side of vegetables, rice, or a light salad. The dish pairs wonderfully with steamed asparagus, sautéed spinach, or a citrus quinoa salad.
