Smoky BBQ Salmon

  • Author: Rayne
  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 salmon fillets (6 oz each), skin-on or skinless, depending on preference
  • ½ cup smoky barbecue sauce (ensure it’s halal and alcohol-free)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh herbs (such as parsley or cilantro) for garnish (optional)
  • Lemon wedges, for serving (optional)

Ingredient Highlights

  • Salmon: Rich in healthy fats and protein, salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart health and overall well-being.
  • Smoky BBQ Sauce: The smoky barbecue sauce is the star of this dish, giving the salmon a deep, rich flavor. Make sure to choose a halal-friendly BBQ sauce without any alcohol or non-halal ingredients.
  • Spices: A mix of garlic powder, smoked paprika, and cumin enhances the smoky flavor of the BBQ sauce and adds complexity to the dish.
  • Olive Oil: Olive oil is used to help cook the salmon, creating a crispy exterior while keeping the fish moist and tender on the inside.

Instructions

Prepare the Salmon

  1. Preheat the Grill or Oven:
    • Grill Method: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 375°F/190°C).
    • Oven Method: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. Season the Salmon:
    • Pat the salmon fillets dry with paper towels. Drizzle both sides of the salmon with olive oil and rub it in gently to coat.
    • Sprinkle the fillets with garlic powder, smoked paprika, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Be sure to season both sides for maximum flavor.

Add the BBQ Sauce

  1. Brush with Smoky BBQ Sauce:
    • Take half of the smoky BBQ sauce and brush it evenly over the top of each salmon fillet. Let the sauce sit for a few minutes to absorb into the fish, enhancing the flavor.
    • Save the remaining barbecue sauce for serving or additional brushing during cooking.

Cook the Salmon

  1. Grill the Salmon:
    • Place the seasoned salmon fillets on the grill skin-side down (if using skin-on fillets). Grill for about 4-6 minutes per side, depending on the thickness of the fillets. The salmon should easily flake with a fork when done.
    • While grilling, brush the fillets with additional barbecue sauce for more flavor.

    OR

    Bake the Salmon:

    • Place the salmon fillets on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes. Bake until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork. You can also brush the fillets with additional BBQ sauce during the last 5 minutes of baking for a glazed finish.

Garnish and Serve

  1. Serve and Garnish:
    • Once the salmon is cooked, remove it from the grill or oven and let it rest for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro and serve with lemon wedges on the side for a fresh, zesty kick.
